Programs

MOVO’s programs grow slowly and in conversation with the artists who use the space. They aren’t designed to generate outcomes or meet deliverables—they’re shaped to support the needs of artists whose practices don’t always fit within traditional frameworks.

We prioritize time, sustainability, and trust over productivity. Our offerings are quiet, flexible, and always evolving.

major Maintenance

A year (or more) of space for sustaining practice.

Major Maintenance offers 200 hours of studio access to ten LGBTQIA+ and/or BIPOC dance and performance makers based in Minnesota. It’s not about creating something new—it’s about tending to what already exists. Artists in this program are not new to their craft, and are looking for space to sustain, repair, revisit, expand, or deepen the foundations of their work and practice, resisting production. Participation is rolling as artists have expressed different needs for beginning and end times as well as varying needs for space.

Company-in-Residence

An extended invitation to inhabit MOVO more complexly.

This low-pressure residency is designed for local dance-makers with a longstanding commitment to justice, process and experimentation. It offers regular, flexible studio access over 2 years and supports artists in holding the space for others—through teaching, sharing practice, or simply being present in the ecosystem. Participation is by invitation and through long-term relationships. Current residents are BODY WATANI

Alt / Pedagogies

A shared inquiry into how we teach, learn, and practice together.

ALT/Pedagogies invites artists to explore teaching as a creative and political act. Through experimental classes, workshops, and non-hierarchical models of exchange, this program supports artists who are developing or reshaping how they hold space for others. The program centers queer, trans, disabled, and BIPOC educators and artists whose pedagogical work resists conventional models. This program is rolling as artists have expressed different needs for program participation. 2025 artists include Connor Berkompas, Marcela Michelle and Sam Mitchell
